Talk of the space needs for the Police Department is still in its infancy, unfortunately. There should have been better progress to this point, because the need will not go away, and a practical solution needs to happen soon. There is much thought and planning that needs to go into coming up with a plan. Unfortunately, some on the CC seem to maybe have their mind made up already, even suggesting a referendum to see what the “people” want. But that is really putting the cart before the horse.
Fortunately, the city clerk added to the discussion, saying a referendum needed to be worded specifically calling for a particular specific expenditure, and not merely seeking an answer as to whether the project should be pursued. ne alderman spoke of the responsibility of CC members who are elected to make these types of decisions. Wise advice for those on the CC who have never been faced with projects of this magnitude yet. Fortunately, there are people around who weathered the storm of the hotel/conference center, the new library and the aquatic center. Give credit where it is due, to the CC of the past – the early 2000’s when things were happening and the city was working towards progress, rather than being mired in the mud, and not wanting to make any of these big choices. They’d rather form a new committee (of the same 2 or 3 councilors) to drag it out, and drag it out, and drag it out.
The most insightful comment of the special meeting were – “it’s time to put our big kids’ shoes on!” I like that attitude. It’s like when I say, “you gotta grow a set”.
